Number stations

Coded shortwave broadcasts, documented history, reception references and listening resources.

SHORTWAVE / CODED BROADCASTS

A voice. A sequence. An unknown recipient.

CALL-UPGROUPSENDING

Numbers stations transmit structured groups of digits or characters by voice, Morse or digital modes. Listening can reveal a broadcast’s format and schedule; it does not reveal the meaning of its encrypted traffic.

The espionage connection is documented in specific cases. In the 2009 Myers investigation, the FBI described the couple’s use of shortwave to receive Cuban intelligence messages. That evidence does not identify every station, broadcaster or recipient.

The Buzzer

Often called UVB-76, this is a channel-marker network on 4,625 kHz with occasional voice traffic. Priyom classifies it separately from its numbers-station catalogue. It is not a verified public attack-warning service.

Monitoring reference ↗

Listen with a reference beside you.

Start with the source recordings and current schedule. Note UTC time, frequency, mode, receiver location and reception quality. Shortwave propagation changes; a missed broadcast or a new reception is not, by itself, evidence of a geopolitical event. Station names and ENIGMA identifiers are monitoring labels, not official sender identification.
